Today I got the monkey off my back.

I made a liberating choice today. I decided to practice what I preach. I decided to not participate in something that I am deeply critical of. I decided to get the monkey off my back. This morning, I disabled my Klout profile. It was a freeing feeling! I then went and revoked Klout’s access to my Twitter account and Facebook account, and anything else it was linked to.

So, don’t look for my score on Klout, don’t look to see what they say I am influential in. As much as I appreciated all the +K’s I received, don’t go there and attempt to give me points on the silly things Klout says I am influential about, you won’t find me there. Instead, look for me on our website, look for me here on our blog, look for me on Twitter, or Facebook. Look for me at our office. Those are the places I hope to make a difference. Those are the places I hope to connect and have relationships with you all. Those are the places you can decide what SYDCON, or I am influential about. Those are the places we are proud of. Take a minute to say “Hey” on Twitter or start a conversation in lieu of giving me +K. Take a minute to chat and learn about me instead of reading a list of topics that I probably know next to nothing about. We can use that minute to learn about each other and actually gain something.

Let’s make the most of social media and decide for ourselves who is influential and interact with each other out of choice versus a number in a popularity contest.

I understand why people don't like it but I have had fun with the perks thus far so I haven't decided to give it up yet. Got a $25 AMEX card which I can really use. But, I don't think that they are the end-all, be-all in terms of determining influence.

TheJackB I received a few Perks, an umbrella & the Axe gel (hey my kid is a Axe addict). And while those are fun (I am glad you received one that you could really use) in general I have too many faults with it to stay associated with it. I don't like that they really dont explain their scoring. Random swings when they make changes makes you think "hey if they were so off last week how can we believe this new algorithm is right?". I have concerns about having to opt out. I know of 13 year olds that have Klout profiles simply because they are someone's Facebook friend.

I dont like that they crowned themselves the "Standard of Influence" as well as getting to decide what we are influential in. So, since the way I see it their negatives (And super long Beta) far out weigh the rare, few, fun perks, I felt the need to opt out our be viewed hypocritical.

Do you hear that sound? It's the sound of me standing up and giving you a standing ovation. Bravo. Klout schmout.

John_Trader1 Thanks! And thanks for stopping by as well! I think we all need to stand up to Klout if we dont agree with them. Stop them from using our likeness & stop them from targeting our friends, families and followers.

Good for you. :-) I don't really check my Klout anymore. I'm not turning it off per se, but I have stopped worrying about it.

ExtremelyAvg Thanks for stopping by! It was something I had been pondering and decided it was time! I can' t say it was a worry (other than for privacy sake). But I was starting to feel that it might appear hypocritical to leave my profile on something I did not agree with.
